Developing an Environmental Product Declaration Database for Concrete Produced in Nigeria

Muhammad Yusuf Abubakar.

Abstract
Environmental Product Declaration provide standardized, transparent, and detailed information on the Life cycle Assessment and environmental impacts of building materials throughout their life cycle. This database aims to enhance environmental transparency, support informed decision-making, and promote local economies by prioritizing regionally sourced materials. By adhering to international standards such as ISO 14025 and EN 15804, the database ensures the credibility and comparability of EPDs. Simapro software was used to determine the environmental impacts. The process involves interview of key stakeholders, collecting comprehensive data. Data were analyzed using SimaPro software. The study not only supports compliance with environmental regulations and certifications but also drives market differentiation for manufacturers. It also serves as a crucial resource for architects, engineers, and builders, fostering a more sustainable and environmentally conscious in the building industry. This study presents a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for 250 m³ of concrete from a batching plant at katampe , evaluating its environmental impacts across key life cycle stages from raw material production, transportation, construction, end-of-life processes, and recycling benefits. The assessment focuses on six impact categories: Global Warming Potential (GWP), Acidification Potential (AP), Eutrophication Potential (EP), Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), Water Consumption, and Energy Use. The study recommends Implementing Environmental Product Declarations(EPDs) for concrete can help improve sustainability, meet regulatory requirements, and enhance market competitiveness. Ensure high quality data collection for raw materials, transportation, production processes, and energy use.Use industry recognized life cycle assessment(LCA) tools and software (e.g., SimaPro, Etab, GaBi, OpenLCA). Collaborate with suppliers to get accurate environmental data on cement, aggregates, and admixtures.

Key words: Environmental Product Declarations Database, Lifecycle Analysis of Concrete, Benefits , Prospect and Challenges.
